Feb 27, 2022 - Grade 9 (Sunday AM)

Hari om Parents,

We had our JCHYK student teachers talking to us about Ahimsa or Non-Injury or Non-violence.

The JCHYK teachers showed a picture of Mahatama Gandhi and asked students to identify him. Mahatma Gandhi led a non-voilent freedom struggle in India that is still honored around the world.

We discussed which cases are considered violence and which ones are not violence. Yudhisthira asked Bhisma the following. "You have mentioned many times that ahimsa is the greatest Dharma, this raises one doubt in my mind. I want to know if eating meat harms or benefits a person."

The kinds then read a few stories to explain this concept. One the stories was about King Sibi where he sacrifices his own flesh to save a bird from a kite pursuing it. There was a discussion about various aspects here:

  • Isn't the Kite justified in chasing its prey?

  • Is the king justified in defending the prey?

  • Who is causing violence here: the kite, the bird or the King?

The tree of Ahimsa was then discussed:

  • Every effect has a cause

  • When the root, the seed, the cause of the world, is the lord, what else can be there in the world other than only him.

  • If we live by ahimsa, with the roots of ahimsa what other values can come as fruits of that?

We can commit injury or harm to others in three ways:

  • By Mind

  • By Speech

  • By Action

We need to be alert and watch our thoughts, words and deeds because results are always according to the actions done.
