6. Story time - Everything is possible

Dave, a 9th grader, was the smallest, skinniest kid in the class. He wanted to be a star wrestler and win a letter in his sport. An athlete's letter, awarded to exceptional athletes, is a cloth emblem with the school's insignia.

All his friends made fun of him telling him that he was not meant to be a wrestler! Only his grandmother told him, " you can accomplish anything by hard work and praying".

After school he would lift weights to build strength; he would practice wrestling to improve his technique; he would run miles to improve his stamina. Before the next season, Dave lost his grandmother.

He was very sad and felt cheated because even if he became a wrestler, his grandmother would never come to know of it. Midway through the season,  Dave's coach expressed how pleased he was with Dave's progress and awarded him and athletes letter. Dave was happy to receive such an honor but felt sad that his grandmother was not there to share the moment.Just then  he was given an envelope that contained a letter from his grandmother he opened the envelope and read the letter in astonishment

Dear Dave,

Congratulations! I knew you would do it! Remember always that you can accomplish anything with hard work and prayer.

Love,

Grandma

7.Brainstorming - What things are hard for us and how or what we do to accomplish them?

We will continue discussion in our next class.

8. We joined the main zoom for 4th grade monthly program .

See you all next Sunday at 9;15!

Regards,

Chitra & Rupa.

Apr 3, 2022 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari om parents,

How are you doing? Here is a summary of our class -
1. We chanted 3 OM's, then om sahana bhavatu & slokas for Lord Ganesha, Devi Saraswati & our Guru.
2. We also revised our 2 newly learned shlokas - Ram Ram Rameti.. & Manojavam..
3.We practised our Dhyan shlok
4. Story time - You become the company you keep
Once upon a time there was a king who got lost while hunting. He ended up in an area where the Bhils lived. The Bhills had a pet parrot.. As soon as the parrot saw the king, he started squawking, " Kill the king; steal from the King. Catch him before he runs away."

Hearing the words of the parrot, the king knew he better run away to save his life. When Bhils heard the words of their parrot, they came out from their hiding place to capture the king, but the King quickly mounted his horse and escaped the hands of the Bhils.

Traveling further, again he heard another parrot, "O Saint & Sages, come and serve the great King. Stop him. It is a  great privilege to serve him."

Hearing  these words, the king knew he had found a safe place to rest. The Rishis  along with the disciples came out to receive the king. The king narrated the episode of the Bhil's parrot and asked why the parrots behave so differently. The Rishi's parrot replied ,"Although we were born of the same parents, I was raised by saints while my brother was raised by Bhils.I learned to talk & behave from saints and my brother learned the ways of Bhils.

5. Game time - We played Hangman.

6. Story time - Narada's pride

Lord Vishnu asked Narada to play vina  for a party in heaven. All the gods and goddesses were invited to the party. Narada foolishly felt proud that the Lord had selected him among all of the talented celestial musicians to play for the party.

At the party, Narada played his Vina and poured  his heart into all of his songs. Everyone, but the Lord, clapped. Narada was unhappy, sensing Lord's  disapproval. The Lord asked Narada to give his instrument to Hanuman Ji.Narada  reluctantly handed his instrument to Hanuman Ji, nervous  that Hanumanji would not be able to handle such a delicate instrument.

Hanumanji started playing the instrument while singing Raam naam. Everyone was absorbed in this divine song. Even Stones started melting in devotion. Narada  soon realized how his ego had hurt  him and made a fool of him. Narada apologized to the Lord and thanked him for teaching him a valuable lesson. Surrender at the feet of the Lord and be a winner.

7. Hanuman Chalisa - We chanted the chalisa and quizzed kids based on meanings to tell the verse.

8 Closing Prayers.

See you all on Sunday @9:15am.

We played games by asking questions like - Can you sing the chaupai where Kumati & Sumati come? And the kids were quick with the answer - Mahabeer Bikram Bajrangi Kumati Nivar Sumati ke Sangi. It was so much fun & the kids were loving it!

4.Story time - Devotee list

Once Narad ji came to know Bhagwan had a list of devotees & he was curious to see it. He went to Bhagwan & said I want to see the devotee list. Bhagwan said of course, & Narad ji goes through the list turning pages looking up & down but couldn't find Hanuman ji's name. He was stunned & went to Hanuman ji & said your name is not on the list. Hanuman ji said it's ok I don't do lord's service to get my name on any list. Then Narad ji got the news that Bhagwan has a 2nd list of devotees. He again goes to Bhagwan & requests to see the 2nd list. As soon as he sees the list he sees Hanuman ji's name on the top. He asks Bhagwan why Hanuman ji's name is on the 2nd list and not the 1st one. Bhagwan smiled & said the 1st list is of devotees who love me & 2nd list is of devotees whom I love the most. Narad ji was humbled by the answer.

Feb 6, 2022 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

We hope everyone is doing well. Here is a summary of our class-

1. We started with opening prayers - 3 OM's, sahana bhavatu, and shlokas for Lord Ganesha, Devi Saraswati and our Guru.
2. We then chanted the Dhyaan shloka.
3. We did a few chaupais from Chalisa -
* kanchan baran... kesa.
Someone who is really strong may look fierce, even though Hanuman Ji is a monkey and very strong he is noble, divine and humble. He attracts others with his radiant personality. Hanuman Ji is the most lovable character in Ramayana as he brings joy to everyone. What really makes us beautiful? For example - How can our ears be beautiful? Girls wear earrings to make it look pretty but it's ability to listen to beautiful things. Similarly our mind is beautiful if we think good thoughts. When we think good thoughts, we perform good deeds.
4. Discussion - What makes one beautiful? We started the discussion by telling kids that doing an oil bath, wearing a beautiful dress, dressing up etc makes one beautiful. Some agreed some were doubtful. Then a beautifully dressed person can be a bully or jealous etc. Is the person now beautiful? How did Hanuman ji, who is  a monkey, is so beautiful with the golden glow? Slowly the kids realized the qualities of Hanuman ji's are what make him beautiful.
5. Story time- Good Friends.
In the village there were two boys Ramu and Kanu.  Ramu was blind and Kanu was lame. They both were poor and the parents are working hard just to put food on the table. These boys want to go to school, but who would take them?
One day, Ramu  had a brilliant idea. He told Kanu how both of them go to school and study. Ramu said, "I have strong legs, I can walk and carry you on my shoulder. You can show me the way."  Kanu said," And I can repeat the lessons loudly for you."
They sought their parents' consent and went to school. The teachers are very happy to see that eagerness to help each other. Yes, Ramu and Kanu are beautiful!
6. Parents meeting - It was so wonderful to see all of you. This was a short meeting to inform parents about the upcoming monthly program and to address any queries or questions they had.
Have a wonderful rest of the week! See you on Sunday @ 9:15 am 😊.

Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

Jan 30, 2022 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari om parents,

Hope you all are doing well. Here is the summary of our class-
1. We started the class with 3 OM's and opening prayers. We then chanted shlokas for Lord Ganesha, Devi Saraswati & our Guru.
2. Next we chanted Dhyaan shlok ( super fast & super slow) & revised the meanings of the qualities.
3. Why is Hanumanji called Mahaveer or Mahabira? Bira means a hero, a man of courage, strength and valor. But, Hanumanji is called Mahabir, the greatest warrior. There are five different kinds of heroism mentioned in the Scriptures. They are:
* Tyagavirah ~ A hero in annunciation and sacrifice
* Dayavirah  ~ A Hero in compassion
* Vidyavirah ~ A Hero in knowledge and learning
* Danavirah  ~ A Hero in charity
* Ranavirah  ~ A brave warrior on the battlefield.
Hanuman Ji has all the five kinds of valor, hence he is called Mahabira. He used all the five in service of the Lord, hence he is called the super superman.
4. Story time - Indra's Vajra.
During a major war, Indra could not defeat the Asuras who were causing great harm to the people. Indra approached Brahmaji, the creator of the world and asked for a weapon for which the Asuras would have no match. Bramha ji replied, "such a weapon can be made only from the backbone of a great sage named Dadhichi". Indra was perplexed. How could you get the bones of a living person? Indra was in a serious predicament. He reluctantly approached the rishi Dadhichi and told that he desperately needed his bones to make a weapon to destroy the Asuras. He was a great saint and out of compassion and welfare of the people, he readily agreed to sacrifice his body to make this powerful weapon, Vajra.
Hanuman Ji is also called Bajrangi, which means he is as strong as Indra's Vajra or thunderbolt.
5. Brainstorming- Kumati or Sumati ? Kumati means wicked thoughts & Sumati means good thoughts.
6. Story time- An eye for an eye
Once there was a man who, out of deep jealousy, was constantly plagued with negative thoughts of his neighbor. One day a genie 🧞‍♂️ appeared and said to him," I can give you whatever you want, but the only condition is that your neighbor will get twice as much." The man was very happy, but did not know what to request. Every good thing he asked for, his neighbor would get twice as much. Since he was jealous of his neighbor, he did not want anything good for him. After much thinking he said to the 🧞‍♂️, " take out one of my 👁 ". The neighbor became blind. This is Kumati. A jealous man is willing to harm himself so that he could hurt others.
7. Story time - The Greater Good
Once there lived a rich man called Mr.D. He thought what can I do to please the lord? Hmm.. maybe I can light a pure ghee lamp in lord's temple everyday. So every evening at dusk, he lit a pure ghee lamp at the temple.
A poor man named Mr.K lived nearby. He thought the road to the village was dark and lonely. I will light an oil lamp 🪔 so that passersby don't stumble and hurt themselves. So every evening he would light the 🪔. One night lord came in Mr.D's dream and said I love Mr.K's lamp more than yours. Stunned Mr.D said but lord I use pure ghee while he uses cheap oil to light the lamp. The lord then patiently said the material value of your lamp is of less importance. The temple is already well lit and does not need any more lamps. Mr.K's 🪔lights the path of so many travelers. Your actions should be such that they benefit the maximum number of people. Service of the world is the service of the lord. This is Sumati. Hanumanji always gives us good thoughts and eliminates evil thoughts.
8. Game time - Jeopardy
9. Hanuman Chalisa chanting- A wonderful way to learn to chant with lyrics and upbeat music. Here is the link-
10. We joined a common zoom for the monthly program.Lovely performance by 8th graders.

See you all on Sunday at 9:15am.
Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

Jan 23, 2022 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you are doing well. Here is the summary of our class -

1. We started with 3 OM's and "sahna bhavtu" followed by shlokas for Lord Ganesha, Devi Saraswati & our Guru.
2. We chanted the Dhyaan shlok and went over the meanings.
3. Game time - We played a game to revise the meanings and names of Hanuman ji we have learned so far. Everyone participated and it was so  much fun. Here is the link - https://wordwall.net/resource/12142389
4. Story time- A curse or a boon.
Once upon a time there was a beautiful Apsara called Pumjisthala who lived in the heavens. She was very mischievous. Once she disturbed a sage in his meditation. The sage became angry and cursed her saying that she would be born as a female monkey in her next life. Pumjisthala was shocked. She cried and apologized profusely. The sage's heart melted. He said he could not undo the curse, but said that she would be free from the curse after giving birth to Lord Shiva.
As the stage promised, Pumjisthala was reborn as Anjana and, together with her husband Kesari lived a life of chastity and purity. She performed austerities for many years and worshiped Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva granted her a boon which would free her from the curse.
When Ravana's atrocities were increasing and he was playing havoc in the world, all the gods prayed to lord Vishnu. The devas appealed to the Lord that the earth cannot take much more of this misery and requested the Lord to come and save everyone. Lord said, I will take birth as Rama, to free the earth from the evil grip of Ravana. Since Lord Vishnu himself was coming on the earth all the devas wanted to come and serve the Lord.
Lord Shiva also wanted to serve Rama.He thought,  If he comes as a member of his family, Rama may hesitate to take services from Shiva. But if he comes in a lower form as a monkey there will be no such problem. Thinking thus, he placed his tejas, brilliance in Sri Hanuman to serve Lord Rama. Therefore, Sri Hanuman is also known as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. His father's name was Kesari, which means lion. Therefore Sri Hanuman is born of a lion like monkey who is fearless, brave and strong. Sri Hanuman purifies everybody that comes in contact with, like the wind God. Therefore, Hanumanji is ~
* Pavansutta  - son of Lord Pavana(wind)
* Anjaniputra. - son of Anjana
* Kesarinadana- son of Kesari
5. Brainstorming - What are some qualities of a good messenger? A good messenger is one who promptly delivers the right message, to the right person, at the right time. One can be a messenger only if one has many good qualities and is trustworthy. Some of the qualities are-
* One must be capable of delivering the message to the right person
* One must be smart enough to recognize the right situation in which the message should be delivered
* One must be clever enough to understand, remember, and deliver the right message with brevity and clarity
* One must be able to deliver the message in time, and cannot afford to be lazy.
Whenever anyone asked Hanuman ji who he was, he would simply say, Rama doot, which means messenger of Lord Rama. This is a true reflection of his humility and a great reflection of keeping lord Rama in his ❤️all the time.
6.  Game time - Played  the telephone game on zoom using breakout room. Super fun!
8. Hanuman Chalisa - We chanted a few chaupais and went over the meanings on how Hanuman ji took different forms in different situations and was always eager to serve Lord Ram.
9.Story time -  When we talk of devotion, guess who do we talk about ? None other than our great Hanuman ji. What makes Hanuman ji so special and divine is not his invincible strength or fortitude, but rather his unwavering and boundless devotion to Lord Rama. From the moment Hanuman ji first saw Lord Ram, he dedicated his life only to the service of Lord Ram. Here is the story which depicts the same devotion -https://youtu.be/e5qYl6yLO70
9. Gita Chanting- We chanted verses 43 &44 of chapter 2. Here is the link - https://youtu.be/aQ09tsR8asI

See you all in the next class on Sunday @ 9:15 am.😊

Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

Jan 9, 2022 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you all had a wonderful start to the New Year. We had a wonderful class on Sunday  and here is the summary -

1. We started with 3 OM's and "sahna bhavtu" followed by shlokas for Lord Ganesha, Devi Saraswati & our Guru.
2. We chanted the Dhyaan shlok.
3. Game time- Spin the wheel. The game was based on names and qualities of Hanuman ji we have learned so far. Lot of fun, kids can try it out on their own time😊 Here is the link
4. Story time- How Hanuman ji got his name? Hanu means chin. Here is the story-
As a small baby, Hanuman ji saw the rising sun and mistook it to be a fruit. He flew up to the sun and swallowed it. The whole world became dark. Nobody could understand who this little child was who had swallowed the ☀️.
Lord Indra, king of Gods, came to free the ☀️. He struck Hanumanji with the thunderbolt on his chin. The thunderbolt is a powerful weapon that will instantly kill anyone struck by it. However, being all powerful, Hanumanji did not die, but while releasing the ☀️, he fell on earth and became unconscious. When the Wind god heard what had happened, he became very angry and stopped the flow of air. And there was chaos everywhere, everyone was choking without air. The gods started praying intensely to the wind God, begging him to accept their humblest apologies. The wind God would accept the apologies only on one condition. He told them, "you must all bless my son with all the powers and good qualities that you possess".  Thus, Hanuman Ji was blessed with all the might & strength.
Hanuman Ji is very strong but he uses his strength only to serve Lord and others, he does not misuse or abuse his strength.
5. Recap of Ramayan rap style - https://youtu.be/D1_OffmN8bw

Dec 12, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you all are doing well. Here is the summary of our class-
1. We started the class with 3 OM's and opening prayers. We then chanted shlokas for Lord Ganesha, Devi Saraswati & our Guru.
2. Next we chanted Dhyaan shlok & revised the qualities we have covered so far.
3. Brainstorming- What is Vakpatutvamcha/ Eloquence? Eloquence is the power of speech. To be able to effectively communicate we must first think then speak. To be an effective speaker, one must know:
* when to speak
* what to speak
* how to speak
* how much to speak
4. Activity : To teach them the art of speaking eloquently we asked the kids to introduce themselves. For example - we asked them to tell us their name, where they live, a hobby and where they see themselves in future. Kids realized that we need to think a little before we become eloquent speakers.
5. Story time : Yes, the fees are doubled.
Socrates was a Greek philosopher and a teacher who's teaching was based on discipline and vigorous, thoughtful dialogue. He never used unnecessary words in his speech and kept his conversations to a minimum. He was a very effective communicator. Once, a young man came to him to learn the art of speaking. The young man was very talkative and introduced himself using many words. Socrates told the young man,He never used unnecessary words in his speech and kept his conversations to a minimum. He was a very effective communicator. Once, a young man came to him to learn the art of speaking. The young man was very talkative and introduced himself using many words. Socrates told the young man, " I will take double the money from you.". The young man was taken aback. Socrates explained I have to teach you 2 things. First, how to be quiet and then how to talk effectively with minimum words. Thus, an effective speaker is the one who can deliver the message with maximum impact using minimum words.
6. Game time: Spin the wheel. https://wordwall.net/resource/9267492
7. Story time : The ox who won the bet.
Long ago, a man owned a very strong ox. The owner was so proud of his ox that he boasted to everyone about the ox's  superior strength. One day, the owner went to a village, and said to the man of the village" I will wager a thousand  pieces of silver that my strong ox can pull a line of 100 wagons."
The next day the man brought his ox to the village and a crowd gathered to see the site. The ox was tied to the first wagon. The owner then whipped his ox and said get up and get along you fool but the ox had never been talked to in such a manner. Hence, he refused to move. Neither the blows nor the harsh names could make him move. Finally the poor man was forced to forfeit the thousand pieces of silver and walked home dejected. The man was sad and he cried. When he went to feed the ox that night, the ox turned to him and said why did you hurt me today? You have never hit me before. Why did you call me a fool? You have never called me such names before. The man immediately apologized and said I am sorry, please forgive me. I will never treat you badly again. Very well said the ox. Tomorrow I will go to the village and pull up the hundred wagons for you. You have been a kind master until today. Tomorrow you shall gain what you lost. So this time when the ox is tied to the first wagon the owner said, " Good ox, show how strong you are, you fine fine creature" and patted the ox. At once the ox pulled with all his strength . The crowd cheered & praised the ox. The ox and the man went home, beaming.
8 Hanuman Chalisa - we chanted the chalisa all the way and it was amazing!! We reviewed a few words along the way.
9. Geeta chanting- we chanted verses 41 & 42 of chapter 2. https://youtu.be/HCA0uDFICAQ
10. Closed the class with a wonderful video. - If you want to watch it again, here it is - https://youtu.be/ohrg4XSy-kM

Dec 5, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari om parents,
Hope you all are doing well. We had a fun class on Sunday. Here is a summary of the class :

1. We chanted 3 OM's and said our beginning prayers - Om sahna bhavtu followed by a shlok for Lord Ganesha ( Vakratunda Mahakaya), Devi Saraswati ( Saraswati Namastubhyam) and one for our Guru( Guru Bramha) respectively. The kids know the shlokas by heart. 👍
2. We then chanted the Dhyaan shlok and revised the meanings of the qualities we have learned so far.
3.  Brainstorming : Ajadyam or Alertness. To be alert means to be watchful. It means that one is aware of their surroundings. We played a game of I spy in class to see how alert and attentive the kids were.
4. Story time : Lazy Misty.
Misty was very lazy. She liked to wear nice things, but she would throw her clothes on the floor and leave her books, shoes and toys everywhere. Her mom would get very upset with Misty's lazy habits.
Her mother prayed to the Lord, "Dear God, let Misty realize how bad it is to be lazy!" Misty heard and laughed. " Mom, how silly you are! How nice it would be if none of us ever had to work! You don't even know what to pray for. Let me pray!" Bhagwan did not like this wicked  prayer. To teach Misty a lesson, he appeared in her dream and said, " May all your work be done automatically." Misty was overwhelmed with joy.
She got up. Her bed was automatically made. She went to the sink. Her teeth were already clean. Misty was thrilled. She went to take a bath but immediately scalding  hot water started falling on her. The water was too hot, but she could do nothing about it. Misty ran out of the bathroom and went to her closet to pick a nice dress for school, instead, an ugly dress came out and put itself on Misty. She shouted, "No, no, I want the other dress!" She tried to remove the ugly dress, but it wouldn't come off. Misty gave up and then went for breakfast. She wanted to eat Fruit Loops cereal, but only dry bran cereal appeared in her bowl. She could do nothing about it. Misty was helpless. She went to the sink, the water splashed all over her. Next, she tried to brush through her hair, but the brush refused to cooperate, instead, the brush comb to head into a tight ponytail, making her look terrible.
Misty did not want to go to school like this. She then realized why her mother said that laziness was bad. If she did not work on her own, she could never enjoy life, she could not eat, play or dress as she wanted. She prayed to God to let me be as before. I will not be lazy anymore. God withdrew the boon and Misty learned her lesson.
5. Game time: We introduced posture and smile check . When the teacher says with the right hand raised,"P and S check " (posture and smile check), all the children should keep their back straight and have a smile on their face. The goal of this is to check if the kids are alert as they play the game. Let us learn to be alert. Because in life only when we notice, we can act, only when we act rightly, we get the benefit. Lazy people cannot be alert.
6. Game time - Telephone Telephone game. We were super excited to try this game out with kids.Traditionally the game is played by sitting in a circle and Player1 whispers a sentence to Player 2 and Player 2 to 3 and onwards. The last person to receive the message says it out loud. Being on zoom we found a creative way to play it with kids and it was so much fun!! The objective of this game is to teach children the importance of being alert.
7. Story time: How Leo learned to be the King. Even if you are blessed with a crown like Leo, you may have to give it up, if you are lazy. Let us learn from Leo.  Help all and be the king of everyone's heart. Here is the link -
8. We ended our class with closing prayers and pledge.

As we were short on time we could not do Hanuman Chalisa chanting or Geeta chanting. We encourage kids to keep practising at home. See you all in the next class at 9:15 am!! Take care everyone.

Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

1. We chanted 3 OM's and said our beginning prayers - Om sahna bhavtu then a shlok for Lord Ganesha ( Vakratunda Mahakaya), Devi Saraswati ( Saraswati Namastubhyam) and one for our Guru( Guru Bramha) respectively. The kids know the shlokas by heart. 👍
2. We then chanted the Dhyaan shlok and revised the meanings of the qualities we have learned so far.
3. Brainstorming- What is Arogata? Arogata is good health. Good physical health means a body that is free of all diseases. Headache, tooth ache, fever are some examples of the diseases of body. Health is wealth. We should be in good physical health to enjoy life.
Just as there are diseases of body, there are also diseases of mind. Pride, arrogance, anger, ego, jealousy, selfishness etc are just some examples. Diseases of the body make us physically weak, and diseases of the mind make us mentally weak.

Nov 14, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

How are all of you doing? Absolutely love kids doing Likhita Japa on their own and showing it off in the class. Very happy to see them do this on their own ❤❤. Here is the summary of our last class -

1. We started a class with opening prayers by chanting 3 OM's and then sahna bhavtu. Next we chanted shloka for Lord Ganesha( Vakratunda Mahakaya..), Devi Saraswati( Saraswati Namastubhyam .. ) and then for our Guru( Guru Bramha..).
2. We chanted the Dhyaan shlok. Good to see kids have memorized this shlok.👏🏻👏🏻. We played a small game, here is the link if the kids wish to practice - https://wordwall.net/resource/9820598.
3. We revised the qualities of Lord Hanuman ji we have covered so far along with their meanings.
4. Brainstorming - Nirbhayatvam/ Fearlessness. We discussed what is Fear? Most of the time we are afraid of the unknown; we imagine and we project. When we live honestly, keeping Hanumanji in our hearts we become fearless. We also discussed what we are afraid/scared of?
5. Story time - The Foolish, Timid Rabbit. Here is the link to the story - https://youtu.be/bKMXzk1eTCk
So are we going to be like the timid rabbit? No, we must be like the 🦁. Before we say," I am scared," determine whether the fears are real. When we pray to lord Hanuman, we become  strong and fearless like him.
6. Names of Hanuman ji - Please check the Whatsapp group for the list.
7. Story time - Rosa Parks.
Rosa Parks was a courageous African American woman. Her story begins in 1955 when she was sitting in the front section of a bus. She was asked to move out of her seat solely because of the color of her skin.At that time,  African Americans were forced to sit in the back of the bus. Only people who were whte were allowed to sit in the front. She knew that she was no different from anyone else, regardless of skin color, so she refused to budge and courageously resisted. She was soon arrested and thrown into jail for her refusal to comply with the unjust law.

When she got out of jail, she started a boycott against the bus company. Soon  other African-Americans joined her in the boycott and refused to ride the bus. Only white Americans were  left riding the bus. The bus company's profits plummeted as they lost their African-American customers. As the profits kept going down Rosa's  hopes soared. Faced with the prospect of bankruptcy, the bus companies were forced to allow African-American passengers to sit anywhere in the bus. Rosa's courageous act was the catalyst that started the Civil Rights movement in the United States. To this day, Rosa Parks is remembered for her tremendous act of bravery.

8. Game time - Played a quiz about what we have learned so far in the class. Here is the link for the game - https://wordwall.net/resource/25014908
9. Hanuman Chalisa - We saw this beautiful video and chanted along. Here is the link - https://youtu.be/jTNu-R9KA-4.  We encourage kids to have a copy of the Chalisa book and chant along.
10. Closing prayers & pledge.

It was a very interactive and fun class. Looking forward to seeing all of you on Sunday at 9:15 am🙏.

Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

Oct 24, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you are doing well and staying healthy. We had a great class today. Here is a brief summary of our class -

1. We started our class with 3 OM's and Sahna bhavtu. Then we chanted the shlokas for Ganesha (Vakratunda Mahakaya), Devi Saraswati (Saraswati Namastubhyam) & one for Guru ( Guru Bramha). Absolutely ❤️ how kids chant it.
2. We chanted the Dhyan shlok.
3. Reviewed the concepts learned in previous classes - visible and invisible backbone, buddhi, balam & yashas and their respective meanings as well. We also played a mini challenge game where kids had to chant one word of the shloka turn by turn. It's just been a little over a month and most of them know the complete shloka.
4. Brainstorming - What is Dhairyam? Dhairyam is courage. Is courage jumping from the second floor of the building or jumping into a lake, even when you cannot swim? No, this is not courage. This is foolishness! Courage means facing challenges patiently, and with poise. For example, I do not like to go to the dentist, but I gather the courage and go. As a result I benefit. In any situation, when I lose my courage, I do not succeed.
5. Yoga time - We stretched, did tree pose, relaxed our shoulders and did some eye exercises and got ready for our story time.
6.Story time - The transformation of Ratnakar.
Valmikiji, the great saint, wrote the Ramayana. Before he turned to God, he was a professional robber named Ratnakar. He had no education and no talent. To support his family and children, he would rob anyone who would pass through the forest.
Once, Narada was passing through the forest. Ratnakar stopped him and said, " Hand over all that you possess or else..." Narada smiled and said, "my dear man all I have is my Vina. You can have it. But, do you know that you're committing sins when you harass and rob people?" Ratnakar replied, " but how else will I feed my family? I have no other skill." Naradji responded, " I know you're doing it for your wife and kids, but have you ever asked them if they are going to share in your sins? If not, you will have to go through the punishment all by yourself. Go home and ask them.I should wait for you here." Ratnakar went home and asked each one of them and they all refused to partake in his sins. He realized what a fool he was!
Without his family's support, how would you wash away all sins? Hurriedly, he returned and pleaded to Naradji to give him a solution to his problem. Naradji told him "sit here and say, Ram, Ram, Ram .. " until I return. Years passed. When Naradji finally returned, he found that a giant ant hill had formed around Ratnakar. Ratnakar had never left the spot and never stopped chanting the name of Ram! Naradji woke Ratnakar from his trance and renamed him Valmiki, which means an ant hill. Through prayer,  Valmiki had the courage to give up his sinful way of life. He washed away his sins and became a saint. The moral of the story is we should have the courage to change.
A lot of questions/debate followed this wonderful story. I hope all the parents got to hear from the kids' view.
7. Meditation - One way to meditate is by writing & chanting God's name. We asked the kids to write in a notebook and it was so amazing to see how enthusiastically each one wrote Lord Ram's name. We showed them how to write in Hindi/Sanskrit and they wrote flawlessly.👌. Next  class onwards we would encourage them to have a notebook and pencil handy. Super impressed by the  kids.
8. A mini video on courage - https://youtu.be/rkg-ffNGv_E
9. Closed the class with shaanti mantra.

Have a wonderful week everyone! Hope to see the kids in the next class. Take care.
Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

Oct 17, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hope you all are doing well & enjoyed celebrating Navratri & Dussehra. We had a short class and here is the summary

2. We then chanted the Dhyaan shlok.
3. Reviewed the concepts from our previous class - visible and invisible backbone, meaning of Buddhi & Balam.
4. Brainstorming - What  is Fame? How do we achieve it? Fame and greatness do not come by luck or chance, but through dedication, good habits and hard work. So we listened to the story of the our great teacher "Gurudev" . Here is the link - https://youtu.be/Am5DkzrOKo4. Are bad people famous? Is Ravan famous? Yes, he is. Our actions, good or bad, make us famous. During the discussion we heard a lot of names from famous personalities in the music industry, politics, bollywood and cricketers.
5. Game time - Hanuman Vadati (exactly like Simon says) with a twist. The action words following Hanuman Vadati were in Sanskrit. For example Hanuman Vadati upavishatu ( sit down). Kids are quickly catching up on Sanskrit words used while playing:)
6. We all joined a common zoom for Saraswati Pooja and concluded with pledge.

See you all on Sunday @9:15am. Take care everyone!!

Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.

Oct 3, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Here is the summary of our yesterday's class -

1. We started the class with 3 Om's followed by Sahna Bhavtu, Vakratunda Mahakaya for Lord Ganesha, Saraswati Namastubhyam for Devi Saraswati & Guru Bramha for our dear Guru. Kids did an amazing job chanting the shlokas.

2. We then recited the Dhyaan shloka & revised the concepts covered in last classes i.e., visible & invisible backbone and the meaning of Buddhi. We also cleared doubts/questions.

3. Brainstorming -  Meaning of Balam - Balam means strength. Here we talk of physical & mental strength.

4. Story time - Bheema's Arrogance. Here is the link - https://youtu.be/EVtpsH5LV-Q

So after that story we had a brief discussion about Bhima & how he was physically very strong. Why, then, could he not move Hanuman ji's tail? Bhima was temporarily blinded by the arrogance of his own strength and, therefore, became mentally weak. The moral  is physical strength without mental strength is not effective.

5.Game time - We took a brief movement break with Hanuman vadati. Amazing to see how kids are quickly catching on to Sanskrit words.

6. Story time - We just celebrated Gandhiji's birthday on Oct 2nd and here is a perfect story in line with our class topic. Cheating is wrong. When Mahatma Gandhi was a student, an inspector, in charge of reviewing classes, came to school. A dictation was given to the pupils to see how proficient they were in their studies. The class teacher was very anxious to get good reviews. As the dictation was going on, the teacher suddenly stopped near Gandhiji. He secretly signaled Gandhiji to look at the neighbor's notebook and copy it. Gandhiji understood what the teacher wanted him to do but he refused. Why did he refuse to copy? Because Gandhiji knew copying from another is morally wrong. He was mentally very strong and did not resort to cheating to get good grades.

7. Geeta Chanting - We chanted shlok # 39 & 40. Here is the link if the kids want to practice at home - https://youtu.be/R3pRQIaPdPE

8. We closed our class with Shaanti mantra & Pledge.

9. We invited the parents for a virtual meet & greet with teachers. It was so nice to meet all of you. So glad to see that we had a wonderful start to our balvihar classes. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to us.

*Before we forget, here is the link for the online bookstore - https://www.chinmayapublications.com/books. In the search bar type Hanuman Chalisa book and you can follow the steps from there on. It is an $8 book. It is a kid friendly book and would be very helpful when we start Hanuman Chalisa.

**Also the Zoom link details like meeting id & password are shared in the description of the whatsapp group.

Next Sunday we do not have a class due to Navratri celebrations! Happy Navratri to all of you in advance! Take care.

Regards,

Chitra & Rupa.

Sept 26, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you all are doing well & enjoying the wonderful fall weather. Our class was awesome with energetic & happy kids. We did a lot of fun things and here is a brief summary

The kids are so well versed with all the shlokas. 👏🏻👏🏻
2Chanted the Dhyaan Shlok-
Buddhir balam yashodhairyam nirbhayatvam arogata
Ajadyam Vakpatutvam cha Hanumat smarnat bhavet

Through the worship of Shri Hanuman one will be blessed with Buddhi (intelligence), Balam (strength),Yasas (fame),Dhairyam (courage),Nirbhayatvam (fearlessness), Arogata (free from diseases), Ajadyam (alertness) and Vakpatutvam (eloquence). These are the eight virtues that make our invisible back bone strong.
3.  Reviewed the concepts from our previous class - visible and invisible backbone.
4.  Exploration : What is Buddhi? Intellect is buddhi in Sanskrit. Our intellect helps us to discriminate between what is right and wrong. Intellect is a gift from God, given only to human beings.
5. Story time : Akbar and Birbal.
In India, there was a king named Akbar, who had a very intelligent advisor named, Birbal. One day, the king decided to test the intelligence of all his ministers. He ordered, " Find out how many crows are there in our country. I need the answer within a week." At the end of the week the king demand an answer in court. None of the ministers, except Birbal,  had the answer for the king. Birbal said we have 27,097 crows in our country. The king said what if you have the incorrect number? The king said the punishment is severe for the wrong answer. Birbal said Sir, if the number of crows is less than my count, then some have gone to visit the relatives out of the country. If there are more, then some of the crow's relatives must have come to visit them here. Admiring Birbal's intelligence the king gave him a big reward.
6. Think: Although, I must. Some examples are -
   * although it may be boring, yet I must do all my homework.
   * although I may be sleepy, I must brush my teeth at night.
These are the actions of people who use their intellect.
7. We also watched a fun video on Hanuman ji depicting his virtues and characteristics. Here is the link to the video -
8. Game time : We took a small movement break & played a familiar game Simon says but with Hanuman vadati. It was so much fun to do the action words in Sanskrit.

Stand - Uttishthathu

Sit - Upavishathu

Jump - Utpattathu

Dance - Nrityathu

Run in place - Dhaavathu

Swim - Taratu

9. Geeta chanting - Today we started with Geeta chanting, Chapter 2 - Shloka 39 onwards. We only did Shloka 39 this time. Next class we plan to do 39 &40. Here is the Swamiji's link for practice -

https://youtu.be/R3pRQIaPdPE

Sept 19, 2021 - Grade 2 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om parents,

Hope you are all doing well and had a wonderful summer! We had a great start with a bunch of enthusiastic and happy kids for our first class. It was fun & interactive and we learned a bit about each other today during introduction. Here is the brief summary of our class -

Most of the kids knew all of these by heart.
2. Kids introduced themselves by stating their name, where they live , favorite god and their favorite thing to do. In the process we knew we have lots of artists and sport players. Big Surprise - 5 of our friends live in Florida :), how cool is that
3. Then came a brief video on the hero of our class - guess who? Of course the super Superman Lord Hanuman ji!! We also played a fun video of Mahabali Maharudra song.
4. Brainstorming: Vertebrates versus Invertebrates. In that we learned today about visible backbone( our spine) and the invisible backbone( our mental strength).
5. Story : The Empty Pot
Once there was a king with no heir to the throne. One day, he devised a clever plan to select the right person as the successor to the throne. The king gave flower seeds to all subjects in the kingdom and announced, "you have six months to grow the healthiest plants you can. I shall choose the future king based on the growth of your plant."
Six months passed. All the subjects came with healthy plants in their hands proceeded towards the palace. A young boy also rushed towards the palace but his pot was empty. Nothing had grown! All the people laughed at him. The young boy said nothing and only smiled in response. When the king looked at the boy's empty pot and asked what happened ? The boy replied, "your majesty, I watered.I fertilized. I took care of it, but nothing grew. I am sorry, but I have tried my best."
The king then shocked the crowd by proclaiming the boy as the future king. " You have all proven unworthy. I gave you roasted seats that would never sprout. Each of you lied, because of the greed to gain the kingdom, but only this young boy despite all your jeers and taunts spoke the truth. Thus, he is the only one among you who is fit to be the future king."
Ask the kids why they think the boy became the king? The boy was sure of his efforts he knew he had worked hard and was very careful and yet his seeds just did not sprout.  He had a choice.  He could have cheated and replaced those seeds just as everyone else in town. Instead he was able to stand firm & he refused  to lie. Because he had a strong invisible back bone that allowed him to stand up for what is right and uphold his virtues and beliefs.
6. Discussed a few stories about Lord Hanuman.
7. Joined for Aarti on common zoom link.

Today's was a fantastic class. See you all again next Sunday @9:15am.

Regards,
Chitra & Rupa.
