    • Theoretical understanding of  Prasada buddhi and Krsnarpanamastu is easy but we need to put it practically
    • Everything in universe is energy and we are giving meaning to it

Apr 24, 2022 - Bhagavadgeeta (Sunday AM)

Summary from Anil ji

In today's session, the Shrimad Bhagavad-Gita: Karma Yog (chapter # 3) - Shloka 29 was reviewed.

प्रकृतेर्गुणसम्मूढाः सज्जन्ते गुणकर्मसु ।

तानकृत्स्नविदो मन्दान्कृत्स्नविन्न विचालयेत् ॥29॥

prakṛiter guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ sajjante guṇa-karmasu
tān akṛitsna-vido mandān kṛitsna-vin na vichālayet
Padavibhāga
prakṛiteḥ—of material nature; guṇa—by the modes of material  nature; sammūḍhāḥ - deluded; sajjante—become attached; guṇa-karmasu—to results of actions; tān — those; akṛitsna-vidaḥ—persons without knowledge; mandān—the ignorant; kṛitsna-vit- persons with knowledge; na vichālayet—should not unsettle

Meaning
Although many know that all actions performed by humans are attempts to fulfil themselves in this materialistic world, only the perfect one realizes this Truth and becomes quiet and unattached in all their activities. Nobody can avoid the three gunas: sattva, rajas and tamas. The question may be raised that if soul is distinct from the guṇas and their activities, then why are the ignorant attached to sense objects?
Shree Krishna explains in this verse that they become confused by the guṇas of the material energy and think themselves to be the doers. Obsessed by the three modes of material nature, they work to enjoy sensual and mental delights. They are unable to perform actions as a matter of duty, without desiring rewards. One should not show ego and the progress is not possible if there is no compassion.
However, the kṛitsna-vit (persons with knowledge) should not disturb the minds of the akṛitsna-vit (persons without knowledge). This means that the wise should not force their thoughts onto ignorant persons by saying, "You are the soul, not the body, and hence karma is meaningless; give it up." Rather, they should instruct the ignorant to perform their respective karma, and slowly help them rise above attachment. In this way, after presenting the distinctions between those who are spiritually wise and those who are ignorant, Shree Krishna gives the sober caution not to unsettle the minds of the ignorant.

Summary from Kavita ji

On the occasion of Rama Navami, we started off our class with Lord Rama bhajans, Hanuman Chalisa and pooja concluding prayers.

Reviewed Bhagavad-Gita: Chapter Karma Yogah: Shloka 28

·        Gunas

o   Senses - the organs only sense; however, the mind is perceiving all the sense signals and the gunas are created in the mind

§  State of mind is oscillating between these states

·        Tamas (sleep)

·        Rajas (work)

·        Sathvik (prayer)

§  Key is to take control of state of mind, which is to move from tamasic state to rajasic state to sathvic state instead of emotion

§  It is hard to control the emotions that arise in us; however, we can control what meaning we give to that emotion, which is called feeling.

        • Our feelings to an emotion is based on our state of mind

o   Object -gunas of objects in the external world (eg, food, peoples, entertainment, etc all have forms of tamas, rajas, and sathvik)

o   Do not get attached to what? Or what does not attached mean? Be detached to likes and dislikes

§  Think about what you have and be grateful and happy

§  Dive in deep into the core problem and not just at the surface of symptoms

·        What is the core problem of likes or dislikes

·        What are the symptoms of likes and dislikes (observe likes and dislikes play in us)

·        Desire is in intellect – turbulence in mind – response erratically

·        Cannot stop desire until death; emotions are part of being human

·        Key is to have control of our feelings to emotions and how we perceive desire

·        Desire – want something (likes and dislikes); however, results are controlled by natural law

·         Cycle of desires to results and results to desires

·        How to be detached to likes and dislikes?

1.      Look at the big picture of desire or result that make the moment insignificant

2.      Have prasad bhudhi (whatever comes take as prasad)

3.      Shree Krishna arapanawastu (all actions give back to Lord)

          • If you do not get the results you want, keep on trying with same methodology and if you don't still have the results then pivot

o   Contemplate: answer to the core of the problem not to the symptoms of the problem

o   Answers are already within us.

o   We go for efficiency over effectiveness

o   Analogy given:

o   we have to go to the bench to observe the game from a big picture and then go back into the game to make the change

o   look at the forest from distance but also be able to hug the trees

o   Many times, we question why me?  Why does this happen to me?  However, everything happens for a reason and to make us better. Convert this to positive energy to transform us.

o   Levels of maturity – continuum of maturity

§  Dependent- personal effort- there is no confidence externally or internally

§  Independent – personal effort- confidence comes out (does not mean that it was not there but was just hidden); also one has likes and dislikes

§  Interdependent (dependent cannot do this but independent can become interdependent) – every opinion is an opinion, I cannot change an opinion; no fights, conversation is influencing each other

o   From big picture: who are kids?  They are jeevas, who have come down to attain liberation (like us), to burn all previous karmas and vasanas

o   Difference between Shree Rama and Shree Krishna

Shree Rama

o   Serious

o   Leading

o   Ideal

o   Kept relationships

o   Performed good things via action

o   Executed by playing the game

o   Had challenges but lead life to set example for others/ was a value based leader

Shree Krishna

o   Playful

o   Jolly life

o   Guiding figure/advised on "follow what I'm saying"

o   Coach

o   Think like Lord Krishna (as a coach)

o   Leadership lessons from Lord Rama

o   Why did Lord Rama hid and kill Vali if He is a man of values

§  If Lord Rama was in front of him, Vali could have gotten all of Lord Rama's powers

§  Lord Rama was friends with Sugriva (person of value) and Sugriva was declared the next king

§  Recognize values in others then these values will invite others to them and doing more

§  Building relationships in others – we follow values

§  Trust = character and competency

§  Vali was competent but had no character

§  Sugriva had character but was not competent

§  Example given how Lord Rama made Laxman and Sugriva work together since Sugriva did not appreciate Laxman.  They worked together to resolve a problem.

o   Observation of Situation

§  Understand gap

§  Waiting to fill in the gap or change (don't jump in)

§  Microlevel team building (let the juniors work together)

o   Training the leader to be top leader

§  Lord Rama was in search of Ma Sita; however, He selected Sugriva to be the leader in search of Her instead of doing this Himself

§  Good leader is to continue the work while being respected and coach to bring the juniors up to PAR

o   Raising a child

§  Up to 5 years recommend to pamper the child

§  Up to 16 years recommend to discipline the child

§  At or around 16 years, be friend the child and train him/her to be a leader (freedom, power, trust, no interference, encouragement) à successor must be part of a successful system

o   Right person for right work

§  Everyone has SOME ability but not all have ability

§  Look for the right person for right job

§  Give people opportunity (knowing that they are not right person)

§  Vasana (svadharma) -> vasanas expression themselves

§  If give the right person the right job -> then will help them spiritually also

o   Lora Rama's army

§  Angada – leader

§  Jambavan – advisor

§  Hanuman – executor

o   Testing ability of team members

§  Give role fit for them – test them

§  Help them professionally/spiritually

o   Leadership insight

§  Leader must have ability to do things

§  Learn to extract the work

o   Test ability of team member

§  Put them to challenge – growth will come from there

§  Give opportunity to fail and succeed

o   Recognize your strength

§  Stick to values

§  Need to work hard

§  Take challenges

o   Hanuman had right attitude at work

§  Guided Sugriva

§  Attitude is to do the work – ppl who are proactive versus reactive

o   How to be a great problem solver (overcome obstacles)

§  Hanuman on the way to Lanka

·        Mainaka- mountain – she noted to Hanuman that you are going to Lanka, relax for 20 min to 1 hour (small deviation); Hanuman noted I'm on a task and I will not stop until finish (fortitude goal)

·        Varata -surasa – withstand temptations; some problems cannot be solved straight; have an open mind and use intelligence (intelligence)

·        Simhika – caught Hanuman's shadow and went into her and killed her; example for employee to let go, intervene, or have a hard stance (power)

Summary from Mihir ji

Chapter 3 - Shloka 27

prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah

ahankara-vimudhatma kartahamiti manyate

The unwise person thinks that they are doing all actions. But it is our gunas which are doing the actions. The wise knows the actions are based on the gunas (nature) and hence not expecting any results. The gunas (nature) is making us do the actions.

The unwise feels he / she is the doer as the ego is identifying with the mental state (satvic / rajasic /  tamasic)

If one is a manager of a team you can look at team dynamics and not at the individual level. The department head is looking at various teams at a higher level. Think like a CEO and act like a leader.

"I" attaches to the ego qualities. If a person attaches to or identifies with the Body / Mind or Intellect, the ego makes the person feels that he / she is the doer of all actions.

A paradigm shift can help to make you look at things in a different way. Ignorant man thinks he is doing the actions. With a paradigm shift one can know the that gunas are doing the actions not the person.

Example - When we are advising to others it is easier to look at things in a different view point.

Awareness of emotions that are coming can help you transform. No one is born with equanimity, it is a learned skillset.

A karma yogi is trying to be in equanimity. Emotions exists in all of us. Example - Ice when heated becomes water and water when boiled becomes vapor or steam and no one can feel it. But steam can move an engine, it is active.

When an emotion arises what is does to me. Am I ice cold or Tamasic, Am I boiling or Rajasic or am I taking actions with empathy - Satvic. The state of mind gives 3 different emotions and actions.

Discussion on Chandas - literal meaning of chandas is "closed box". it is meant to be sacred and not secret. The chandas are saved only for those who can use it.

All karmas are done specifically created by gunas. Connection between Brahmanda and Pindanda. We hear, touch, see, taste and smell things. They are Gnyan Indriyas.  Connect with Brahmanda. For them to function Brahman is needed. Like, to hear (ears), we need space, to see (eyes) we need light, to touch (skin) we need air, to taste (tongue) we need water, to smell (nose) we need earth.

Watch your mind when anger comes, know that you are angry but do not become anger itself. Acknowledge emotions and give the right outlet.

Finer from - tanmantras -all organs need to function properly

As the light has 7 colors so does the Sun god has 7 horses.

We are made up of gunas, gunas are indriyas and they have elements in Brahman.

Prakruti has no ichha, Chetana has ichha. Gunas act but we take ownership of actions.

Seed has a swabhava to become a tree but needs a gardener to water and take care of the seed for it to be a tree.

Same with Chetana, needs God to take care & nourish to be able to flourish.

Chapter 3 - Shloka 28

tattva-vittu mahabaho guna-karma-vibhagayoh

guna gunesu vartana iti matva na sajjate

A gnyani understands the emotions but does not attach to it. The gnyani stand a far and observes. The gnyani knows that the actions are due to prakruti or gunas. Rama was sad and crying when Ravana took away Sita. Parvati decided to take the form of Sita and meet with Rama. Rama, even in his sad state recognized Parvati as Sita and asked Parvati where is Shiva

Feb 27, 2022 - Bhagavadgeeta (Sunday AM)

Summary from Radhika ji

Chapter 3 - we discussed verses 21 thru 24
When we talk about devas, eg: Surya deva/Indra deva/Chandra deva - they are essentially divinity in those entities
Unless their energy is there, life cannot exist in this universe.
Chandra(moon) is the reflection of the sun - if he doesn't do his job - there won't be oshadhi's (meaning medicines) which can be interpreted as vegetation we need for eating. Unless moonlight is there, growth will not happen.
All jnyanendriya's have abhinama devata's. Unless they work properly, if we take pindanda, the body is inert. Unless all these work properly, ie rasa, roopa, sparsha, gandha, unless the presiding deva's work properly life cannot happen. When Jiva leaves this body, all of them leave with prana the last to leave.
Be aware and take care of your indriyas so they can serve us. fro eg: Anything we consume, take part, we have to be aware that this is a 'shesha' ie. given over, as prasad after the yagna. Otherwise, one will become selfish.
Verse 21, talks about Sreshtah - one you look up to - in your home, parents are sreshta. Children follow what parents do. We as parents should exercise caution and set good examples for our children. There shouldn't be a disconnect between what we think and how we act. This is required for the path of sadhana. That unity, integrity is what one needs to develop. Always strive to mean what you say.
22,23,24 are Bhagavan's own example
He has shown what the duties are when one is born as a human. What is it he has to do on a daily basis. Nityakarma, Naimithakarma. Bhagavan knew that if he didn't do these daily karmas, other people would follow him and not do them. An example of a teacher snacking in the middle of class - students will follow. Bhagavan is showing us that it is important how we conduct ourselves.
Verse 22 - Bhagavan is making a statement that there is nothing he needs to attain and nothing that he doesn't have but he is demonstrating that he is doing his daily karmas. To understand, let's look at his own life - from childhood to end of his avatar, he constantly worked on discharging his duties - to perfection. Why did he do this? He was setting a model example for the rest of us. And doing it in a fair and impartial. He was with Pandavas because Dharma was with them. Shishupala was his relative and he gave him 100 chances before the chakra came down to strike him. Even with Duryodhana and Karna, he conducted himself with dignity and gave several chances.
In verse 20, when Bhagavan is talking about Janaka, he shows us why a jnani/realized person does work. You cannot be without doing work for a 'kshana'. People start work for themselves, as the mind purifies, they will start to understand why they do what they do and think beyond themselves.
Verse 23 - Bhagavan tells us what will happen if he doesn't do his daily karmas. Bhagavan says that if he didn't do karma, people will follow him. Think about sunrise/sunset/rotation of the earth/gravitational force/season let's ask ourselves what would happen if any of these events didn't happen, what would be the impact on the world? All these are daily phenomena pervaded Bhagawan that we are dependent on for our daily lives.

For eg: if we are bound by prakriti gunas, we are bound by action and we have to do something at least to maintain our bodies. Bhagavan is telling us that we have to work all the time.  Without this, we won't be able to lead our day to day lives.
Verse 24 - Varna is often misquoted and misused. Caste has been translated in a hurry. Varna means color. Let's say, for example, 4 sons born to a Brahmin, each can belong to 4 varnas.
1 - Brahmin pandit, 2 - business, 3 - hindu military hotel, 4 - service
Shushrusha is what a shudra does - one needs to be a shudra first. varna comes from our innate nature ie. Nature is what we carry in the subtle body from one birth to the next.
People who have a particular inclination, they should excel in that activity when they follow their inclination.
Bhagavan is stressing this and showing us how this is to be done -
There are 3 things ie. Intent or desire to do work, know how to do work and actually doing the work.
This was followed by a general discussion on the topic covering the above points.

Verse 19:
तस्मादसक्त: सततं कार्यं कर्म समाचर |
असक्तो ह्याचरन्कर्म परमाप्नोति पूरुष: || 19||

tasmād asaktaḥ satataṁ kāryaṁ karma samāchara
asakto hyācharan karma param āpnoti pūruṣhaḥ

Translation: Therefore, giving up attachment, perform actions as a matter of duty because by working without being attached to the fruits, one attains the Supreme.

Bhagavaan starts with 'tasmāt', meaning therefore, a clear indication of bottom-line,
This is a concluding slokha of a particular set of ideas, giving all the details, supplemented with all information and arguments in previous 5 slokhas, and hence uses the word 'tasmāt'.

tasmāt—therefore; asaktaḥ—without attachment;
satatam—constant work to be done all the time;
asaktahsssatatam - It DOESN'T mean do work without interest.
Aaasakthi is interest. Note the Dheerga in this word Aaasakthi. Aaa also means one is focussed on karmaphala.
Here in this verse Bhagwan has used Asaktha - meaning, one is doing all the work but focus is not on a particular karmaphala, instead the focus is only on the task, does the best, and then takes/accepts what comes, as the result depends on so many factors.

kāryam—duty; karma—action; samāchara—perform;
Do avashya kaarya, not for the wants, it is for the needs. Any kaarya done for Lokakalyaan, even if one errs, it is forgiven as the intent is goodness/help, and Prathyavaayu (negative effect) will not touch one.

asaktaḥ—unattached; hi—certainly; ācharan—performing; karma—work;
param—the Supreme; āpnoti—attains; pūruṣhaḥ—a person
what is purushah - pura + sha. one who resides in the pura is purusha. Bhagavan. Here it is not the Brahmaandapura, it is the pindaandapura. It is the little one, the individual beings.
Poorushaha - refers to the aathma or the jeeva; jeeva gets its existence when purusha resides there. When jeeva does this kind of work, param-aapnoti, he gets moksha/liberation.

Further Interpretation/Discussion:
This is a summary of verse 14 to 18 as they are connected;
14 and 15 discussing cycles and sacrificing
16 - if one does not follow this wheel they are living in vain, so one should contribute and sacrifice
17 - one who is satisfied with one-self, then there is nothing else to be done. Krishna discusses this.
18 - again depending on no one
19 - what oneself should be doing, performing action without attachment. Also relates to verse 47.
Do the action for the good of the people, for helping others, perform work as is, and not think
about what one should gain from it, and that be happy and accept the result one gets.

Look at the issue neutrally, the result is more conclusive. Look for what happens, who needs to do what, not just for one-self, more for organization, a larger cause like others, country, thinking for the betterment of everyone around one.
People will appreciate the selfless-ness of such person and will join hands, and this can spread this thought process and attitude change to more people.

Summarizes the wheel of action, similar to Raama's abilities to break the bow at Svayamwara, How he removes all his attachments to his guru, to seetha, the things around him, didn't worry about other participating kings, and instead Raama single-focusses on the task to be done with his best efforts.

Removing distractions is very very important.
For example: In Mahabaarath, story of Matsya Yanthra Bhedini. Drona setsup water near by, a tree nearby and a fish tied in a branch in the top of the tree.
one has to see in the water, set the arrow, focus and then hit the fish eye. All disciples of Drona fail to do this, hitting at tree, etc.
Arjuna, the favorite student, comes, pulls the arrow up. Acharya asks what do you see, he says sky, on further focus he says tree, then he is asked to focus further, he says he can see the branch, then the body of the fish, and he is asked to still focus; he saw the head of the fish, finally the he sees the eye.
He is asked to release the arrrow, which he does and hits the eye.
Arjuna was able to remove his distraction and was successful with focussing on the task at hand.

Yagna bhavna, yaja deva poojayaam, the attitude with which one has to work, when all this is done focussing only on the task and not on a particular karmaphala, the jeeva then gets moksha.
Verse 20:
कर्मणैव हि संसिद्धिमास्थिता जनकादय: |
लोकसंग्रहमेवापि सम्पश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि || 20||

karmaṇaiva hi sansiddhim āsthitā janakādayaḥ
loka-saṅgraham evāpi sampaśhyan kartum arhasi

karmaṇā—by the performance of prescribed duties; eva—only; hi—certainly; sansiddhim—perfection; āsthitāḥ—attained;
janaka-ādayaḥ—King Janak and other kings; loka-saṅgraham—for the welfare of the masses; eva api—only;
sampaśhyan—considering; kartum—to perform; arhasi—you should;

By performing their prescribed duties, King Janak and others attained perfection. You should also perform your duties to set an example for the good of the world.

Discussed story on Janaka's dream - current waking state is true, or dream state is true.
Nature of difficulties that Janaka and Arjuna will face as kings are similar, so it is a right example by Krishna of selecting Janaka
Loka sangraha is common between Janaka and Arjuna.
Each person has a role to play. Arjuna's role is a prince of the country, protect the values and rights of the people in his country.
Janaka aadhayahaa - Janaka and other kings. Janaka was one of the greatest Gnyaani at that time, because of that
Mahalakshmi herself came to him as a daughter Seetha.
Arjuna wanted to drop everything and run away. But Janaka though he had all the vaibhogas, he didnt drop anything
and run to the forest, he was a great gnyaani, many aacharyas would go to Janaka to get a clarification about Vairaagya.
He was still in the middle of the life, taking care of kingdom, people, and didn't enter into business of Rama and Sita while they had to go to the forest. Janaka did what he was supposed to do, his focus was on karma yoga and moksha.
He was there as long as he was needed, and later went to vaanaprastha and did what he was supposed to do there.
Loka Sangraha - it means guiding people, not just helping people, to go in the right direction. It is also to prevent people from going in wrong direction.
Janaka is the perfect example of Loka Sangraha, and Karma Yoga, Gnaayana, Vairaagya.

Assignment: Who was King Ashwapathi? and why was he indirectly mentioned in the slokha.

Verse 21:

यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जन: |
स यत्प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते || 21||

yad yad ācharati śhreṣhṭhas tat tad evetaro janaḥ
sa yat pramāṇaṁ kurute lokas tad anuvartate

yat yat—whatever; ācharati—does; śhreṣhṭhaḥ—the best; tat tat—that (alone); eva—certainly; itaraḥ—common; janaḥ—people;
saḥ—they; yat—whichever; pramāṇam—standard; kurute—perform; lokaḥ—world; tat—that; anuvartate—pursues

Interpretation: whatever a great man setsup as the standard, the world follows. Whatever actions great persons perform, common people follow.
Whatever standards they set, all the world pursues.

Children follow what the parents are doing. Father can advice ill-effects of smoking, but if he is a smoker, the children usually also will get tempted to smoke, as they follow what they see. Bigger celebrities of a country are followed.
People felt protected when the paandavaas where ruling. when such heroes coming to a battle to a Dharmakhetra, battle of justice this time if Arjuna runs away, he is to be seen as a great king until he went to the ultimate war. This will be a bad example for his people, and his successor kings. Those who are in power, they make a change in a society, the kings could make a change, and that is not a time to oscillate. Bhagawan explains that people look up to Arjuna, and that he needs to do what is required.

This could also be seen as a way of Krishna answering here in this verse as a direct response addressing Arjuna's state of mind explained in Chapter1. Also in Chapter 2, Slokas 30 to 37 directly talks about why Arjuna should do this Dharma yudhdha. Those who are afraid of his
Gandeeva, they will ridicule him otherwise.

What Amitabh Bhachan does, everyone wants to do! Whatever a leader, or a celebrity does, people will do the same. The change has to come from inside.
A leader, a Shresta has to be careful as he has so much of responsibility towards the society.
